Melissa wrote, "Grandma, Your work is absolutely beautiful. I've tinkered with sewing since I was little and I am not by any means capable of turning out the beauty I see on your site!; Years ago, my home ec. teacher even called me a domesticated cripple when I tried setting up a sewing machine...she wasn't far off mark! I have all of these herbs I grew to make my own teas. I also have yards and yards of linen tablecloths that are partially damaged. I typed in "Can I make tea bags from linen" and I got your website. Do you think, if I made some little plain tea bags from my table cloths, that they would work very well? I keep hearing "use cheesecloth" but I have so much linen. I'm not even sure how to make them close properly, but I'm going to try. Thanks, Melissa Grandma wrote back Hello Melissa - It was a treat to read your email. It's always lovely to find out how people find me. Thank you for taking the time and for writing me such an adorable note. Here are a few thoughts... The first thinking I would consider is making lovely herb tea to give as Christmas gifts. Send along a tea ball or strainer with each gift. What you have read is true. Linen is not used for making tea bags. The cloth that is used if a fine, fine net - similar to a fine bride's veil. Or if you can find a distributor FDA paper. A silly thought...I would buy the least expensive tea bags and refill them with my fine herbs. Do a quick stitch with white thread as a closure. Yes, that would be a lot of work and you would still have yards and yards of linen. What would I do with the yards and yards? I would... make little sacks for my herb tea jars and embellish them with cording and ribbon. make sachet pillows filled with my most fragrant herbs. make Tea Cozies and decorate the plain linen with antique linen or hankie. cut the linen and make napkins. I make my own - no paper napkins here. Dear me.... I don't know how many yards and yards you have but there you have it. Melissa, please let me know what you do with your yards and yards. Please consider sending me photos for my newsletter. Your dilemma might be one that others have. Your problem might be the solution for someone else. ![]() |
